October is Non-GMO month, so we're spreading the word!
What is a GMO?
A GMO is a plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified in a laboratory using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.
Why We Care
GMOs lack adequate testing to determine their long-term safety for human consumption. Additionally, there are numerous health concerns associated with the herbicides commonly used in conjunction with genetically modified crops.
19 European countries have bans or restrictions on GMOs, including Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Greece, Poland, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Belgium.
In the U.S., lableing is still not mandatory, meaning manufacturers do not need to disclose whether their ingredients contain genetically modified organisms.
What You Won't Find Here
While the debate it still hot over the health and environmental risks posed by GMOs, we choose to be informed and transparent.
Our Grocery and Produce departments (center store), as well as dairy, frozen foods, and bulk bins are all 100% non-GMO, and we actively monitor the ingredients of current and new products we stock.
